Dómkirkjan - The Cathedral - The Greater Reykjavik Area Iceland
By Lækjargata , 101 Reykjavík
Region:
The Greater Reykjavik Area
About: (Description)
When the bishopric was moved from Skálholt to Reykjavík the old church on Aðalstræti was not considered grand enough, so it was decided to build a new one. Work started in 1788 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1796. It contains a number of noteworthy objects, among them a carved marble font by Bertel Thorvaldsen which he gave to the church in 1839. Since it was re-established in 1845, the opening of Parliament has always started with a service in Dómkirkjan.
